The Indonesian Journal of International & Comparative Law · Cianjur, since 2014
Law, beyond the State.
A small journal with a stubborn question: what does international and comparative law look like when it starts from people rather than states?
Begun by the Institute for Migrant Rights in West Java, IJICL publishes work that carries humane values beyond the familiar centres of the field.
Founding vision
Why this journal began
The Journal began in 2014 as an academy-based initiative of the Institute for Migrant Rights in Cianjur, West Java. It started from a doubt about the models that place the State at the centre of international life.
The Journal publishes multidisciplinary work that carries humane values into non-Western societies and extends their protection beyond the conventional idea of citizens’ rights. These questions are often neglected in writing on legal development in the Global South, which tends to be dominated by statist perspectives.
In the spirit of free inquiry, the Journal gathers diverse perspectives from law and the social sciences that contribute to a more humane law, in the region and elsewhere. The need is clearest in the lives of people who move across state boundaries.
The Institute for Migrant Rights
The Institute for Migrant Rights was founded in Cianjur as the first organization of its kind in Indonesia, at a time when the country paid little attention to the rights of migrant workers. The Journal is its programme of legal scholarship.
